I heard the cicadas a few days ago, a reminder that Earth time is around the corner. The Golden Rod is the next symbol of late Summer. It will pop up everywhere shortly. I am hoping that the second part of Summer will be calmer, not as tumultuous with thunder storms, smoke, and a plethora of snakes.
Earth time is fundamentally representative of the Mother in the classic sense, the Yin mother, the Mother Mary kind of symbolism.
If we follow this line of thought, we would have a docile nurturing Mother figure that forgives and loves unconditionally.
But that is not aligned with the current state of affairs, with Women’s rights under fire and Women’s health care relegated to the dark ages. Women and children considered second class and third class citizens. Women everywhere, in this country expected to just eat it, suffer from lack of health care, support systems and then rise up and hold the entire family unit together.
And then we wonder why she winds up getting sick, why she is angry, scratching our heads at how that happened. When that kind of thing is basically inventible.
Then we are looking at the the Yang mother figure. A Kali type crossed with a Mary Magdalene type of symbolism.
I think Earth time is about nurturing and supporting life. The thing we do not talk about much is that destruction is sometimes in the service of life and new growth, rebirth if you will. The incubating fetus inside the mother is breaking her down and preparing her for a great transformation – to Mother. That is a messy process, ugly, hard, and bloody.
We do not honor that part of the process, we Americans like to gloss over that and just focus on the precious little baby. Is it a boy or girl? What are you going to name her?
If we could recognize the Earthing process as one that builds and degrades, that nourishes new growth but also breaks down and uses the decay to fertilize. Then we would be Mothering for real- in all the powerful glory.
I do not think our society is ready for this, the masculine energy feels too comfortable in the seat of power and will incur all sorts of useless violence to keep their position intact. There is not enough time for retrubution, there is no way to atone for the imbalance of the power structure.
As we head into another Earth season, watch the world of nature around you turn. Maybe try and honor the transformation within you, no matter how tiny. All movements are victories, as far as I am concerned. The real, alive mother is a force to reckon with and to value. The Earth is all consuming and regenerative, it all cycles.
