Water time is upon us again. The darkness extends longer into the day, the cold air pervades our houses and contracts our bodies. Snow and ice fall and cover the earth, freezing water into stillness and elaborate design. Trees are bare, plants and flowers go dormant, animal and bird life become quiet.
As our qi naturally flows deeper inside, we reflect on the coming months of cold. This is typically a time of dropping. People begin to feel more reserved, have slightly less energy and savor the idea of curling up in front of a generous heat source. In accordance with the cycles and rhythms of the seasons, we initiate the traditional time of rest, retirement and restoration. Refilling the storage tanks of energy in preparation for the spring, when our seeds can sprout and our energy can push forward.
The element of water is associated with the movement of will, the innate drive found within us to survive – to see our future unfold. The forces of endurance and determination that propel us forward with a sense of purpose and a clear identity. The feeling of fear, emerges in response to the energy of water. This is not limited to the standard definition of fear, “being afraid of things”, rather a energetic motion that serves to preserve life. One that fuels our ability to calculate risks, plan for the future, guard our own safety and to grow.
It is this arena, one of depth and darkness, that sparks of transformation begin to appear. The knowing within ourselves that not only preserves our precious light but also demands that we expand and respond to the power of change. The choices that we make to facilitate this process and willingly submit ourselves to allow for this patterns to appear are endlessly presented. The time of water reminds us to hold, to stay within the contraction and oppositional forces, tolerate the fear, wait in the darkness for the seeds of movement inevitably to emerge when we allow our will to become our destiny.
