The popularity of alternative health care is growing. There is a lot more information about supplements and spiritual practices in the main stream media. Advertisers are using the concepts of spirituality to sell products and to promote their services. Even some Western medical practitioners  are selling supplements and suggesting dietary changes. This could be seen as the long awaited integration of alternative and allopathic healthcare models.

There is a lot of money to be made in the sales of health products and services. The incorporation of spiritual language is enticing to the population of people between 20 and 40 years of age. Health care providers can market themselves and their products, making their information accessible to a large consumer audience. There are authentic and non-authentic practitioners practicing. Different healing modalities can reach individuals through myriads of avenues. What defines genuine healing?

The article entitled In the Service of Life, written by Rachel Naomi Remen, highlights the differences between helping and fixing compared to serving health.

Helping and fixing are forms of judgement and inequality. One person has the expertise to cure the “sick” person, and then the diseased person owes the savior a debt. The process of fixing is isolated from the continuum of healing. The injured person becomes dependent on outside forces to be cured. The place that this works well is in regards to surgeries, physical setting of broken bones and the use of certain necessary medications. It does not work so well with long term sickness or emotional imbalances.

Serving someone addresses both parties and is renewing and sustaining. Serving is a perennial energy, similar to the fundamental building blocks of Chinese Medicine. The work that is achieved between the healed and healer, is integrated into a long term recovery plan.

Health can happen if you can see the thread and follow it within a partnership. Both people have to trust the process and take responsibility for it.  People can reclaim parts of their selves that were lost and re-integrate their energy. Sometimes they have to make tough choices, sacrifices and take risks. It is possible for them to cross through the gates, experience transformation and find a working health plan.

Some points to consider on achieving long term health.

  • The earlier this process is started the better.
  • It may take a long time.
  • There will be moments of uncomfortableness.
  • There are sacrifices that have to be made.
  • Awareness helps a lot.
  • Practicing self-care supports the process.
  • There will be bumps in the road.
  • Learning to trust your intuition is a gift of the process.
  • Destruction does not always destroy.
  • Negative experiences can open the door to joyfulness.

There are different ways of approaching health, variations of each healthcare model will ultimately be what suits each individual. Contemplating the options will increase the chances of each person finding their way. Knowing that there is a route that will work specifically for each seeker, can keep them motivated to search until they find what can help them most.
