The energy of mid-February brings our attention to the space in our upper chest, that houses the heart. Around the traditional time of Valentine’s day, a primal energy surfaces. Historically, many of the holidays that we celebrate were conceived within pagan traditions, and chosen specifically to mark seasonal shifts.
The change that we experience around this time of year is that our attention is pulled upwards.
The light is higher on the horizon and the days are longer. The sap starts to flow in the trees,
representing the circulation in our bodies and the awakening from the Winter stillness.
In human embryonic development, a space is created first where the heart will be formed. The undifferentiated cells come together as unit and begin to beat simultaneously all at once becoming an early structure of the the heart. The form undergoes many different stages of development until the final spiral organ of the human heart is complete. It is not until the infant is delivered and has inhaled it’s first breath that a hole in the heart seals up and the begins the business of pumping oxygen through out the baby’s body.
Underneath the heart, mid-way down in the abdomen are the kidneys. The kidneys are the organs associated with the Winter season. The kidneys themselves are made up of many tiny spiral cones that serve as filters.
I picture the two kidneys reaching up into the heart space and tethering a nest into place, this is where the heart makes it’s home. The polarity and partnership that is formed between these two energetic organs help us stay grounded and seated but also encourages us to simultaneously to stretch upwards and and embrace the light above us.
The heart space remains open and receptive, grounded and nourished by the kidney energy. Then the Shen (spirit) of the heart can roost in the chest space. This is love qi, unified spirit and matter. Eros the mingling of the feminine and masculine energies. A spiral of tension that reaches upwards into the ethos and roots downward to embed in the soil of the earth.
This tension of opposites gives us a model. An axis of energy that runs within our own bodies and is reflected in the season that encompasses us. We can use this energetic pattern as a guide for our own growth and development. One network that moves in different directions, circulating energy that grows through vacillations of expansion and contraction.
A process of growth that is alive and pulsating, there are setbacks and mistakes as well as triumphs and success. This time of year, viscerally brings our attention to feeling of being pulled upward to connect with other. As well as feel our feet grounded on the earth, comforted in the solid matter of our individual identity. Progress is made among the dance of tensions in two opposite directions, the taught energy that is generated is partially what powers the momentum of change, breaking down the old and making room for the new.
