There are two different expressions of Shen in Chinese Medical philosophy. Little Shen and Big Shen.

Little Shen is the space within our Hearts, that Our Spirit nestles within. This space is created at the moment of our conception when the Jing forces of the sperm and ovum merge. There is a spark of light, a conversion of energy, as a union occurs, a space is opened and the Spirit migrates from the stars. The star dust fills the void and settles in for a journey of a Human existence, a life. Cells begin to divide instantly and the beginning of a pre-determined path get’s underway, many choices, many twists and turns many options to come.

Big Shen is all of the Spirits that provide the self with consciousness and access to great awareness. There are Five (Shen, Hun, Yi, Po, Zhi) they assist us in living out our predetermined destiny and fulfilling our Spiritual contracts. These Spirits can scatter from fright or trauma. They may come and go, they may settle at times and cry with unrest at other moments. It is the journey of a life time to work with these guardian angels, it is only in death of our physical form that they separate as in the case with Yin and Yang and dissipate back to Earth and fly away to Heaven.

Living is a push a pull, a tension between the forces of the Shens. The guides that protect us and nudge us back to our path. If we stray very far, they will take extreme measures to get our attention. If we accept them and integrate our energies, ground our bodies, allow our awareness to expand, then we have possibilities that hold all levels of power.

If we focus our Shen we can do many things. If we accept our path and integrate we can live brightly, burn some layers of karma and move into a different state of mind.

We need to be careful not to pawn off our dark energies onto other people. This upsets the Shens very much and makes it harder to live an aligned life. We can not blame any type of person or one person for our plight, it is between ourselves and our Shens.

Practice of the breath and mind keep us on track. Nature is a balm that blesses us relentlessly.
