Based on Stephen Karpman’s work 1972

The diagram of the drama triangle is a pictogram that represents the history of a post war industrial society, the focus at the time was on progress.

These technological, medical, agricultural, social advancements came at a great cost to human rights and decent environmental practices. This was acceptable at the time because the quality of living for the Westerner, was greatly enhanced.

Currently, however, there is more at stake and these old patterns need to be re-examined.

The drama triangle is the story of codependency, narcissism and addiction, roles that are forced onto us from the over culture because we are not able to grasp the arc of human dynamics and interpersonal relationship. There is no space, not a lot of room to evolve and to shed old patterns. We are burdened by generations of un-healed trauma in our family lines. There are but a few stilted story lines to squeeze ourselves into, we lack options, knowledge, and skills to embody our precious and unique destiny.

The good news, these patterns are simultaneously a story of trauma resilience. There are whispers of diversity, growth and innovation in a society that is actively changing. The focus is not so much on progress but stewardship, nourishing human development and the life force of the planet.

I enjoyed this comment on how people in this Western culture “grow older” but they often do not grow up.

“They get older. But to grow up costs the earth, the earth. It means you take the responsibility for the time you take up, for the space you occupy. It is serious business. And you find out what it costs us to love and to lose, to dare and to fail. And maybe even more to succeed.” Angelou

The act of raising children, of caring for loved ones as they die, running a business, illness, taking care of a house, having friendships, and living life in all of its forms, twists and turns. These are the fundamental materials of growth.

When I look around at this “pandemic infused world”, I see the absence of a heart. The central focus is missing and the periphery is un-grounded, it is not of the earth any longer. Money has become the power, the dominant decider of all, a voracious superficiality that maws away at the core structure of life and it’s cycles:

Creation

Living

Death

Re-creation

Unchangeable forces, throughout all time.

Krishna Das says if you are going to sing, “Sing as if your life depends on it”. I get it.

If you are going to do it, do it. Don’t do it from your fragile ego dominated self, be propelled from the life force that surrounds you. We have a choice to move away from the codependent, narcissism, addict cycles to a model of tri-adal growth and glory. Be a Creator of your own life, make decisions and dream the life that you want into fruition.

This is not a cute little vision board. The personal work of this sort is serious business and it must be done as if your life depends on it.
