Females are indoctrinated into Western culture at a very young age and told by every novel, pop song and movie that we must fall in love. That may be one of the first historically marketed drug, the feeling of love. We are not only told that we must fall in love but that we need that person to define us and shape our identity in the greater world. Be it a wife, a mother, or a business partner. Males are also sold the song of love but they are never told that they need a female counterpart to be successful.
I read somewhere that the ideology of love was actually formulated around the mid- eighteenth century to control the population and before that time no one spoke about such matters. Let us be honest, it was designed to control the female population. Since the male population was never restricted by the parameters of love or marriage. Love is so integral to our lives, but it is not limited to the romantic kind. Loving people, god, nature, creatures, work, just about anything, but loving for real through the tough times and the joyful times- that is where the juice lives. I am obsessed with the concept of love, the heart is one of my very favorite images. I think that love is ultimately what will save us from destruction. But I want to expand the concept and remind us that it is so much more then just romance.
And that loving often feels painful and it is supposed to.
People are always talking about the love of their lives being someone that they have been lucky enough to marry or an unrequited love that they brushed up against for a short period during their time on this planet. But the real love of life is the Self. Once I love myself then it spills out gracefully to all the people in my life. I am empowered and no one can use the concept of love to persuade me to buy beauty products.
